Interview with The Oddness: Unveiling the “Wickerman” EP
House Music with Love (HMWL) sits down with The Oddness, the innovative Melbourne-based producer, to discuss his latest EP “Wickerman.” Known for his eclectic blend of downtempo electronica, dub, world music, and deep house, The Oddness is making waves with his unique sound. We dive into the inspiration behind his new EP, the collaboration with Austrian artist Stefan Obermaier, and what’s next for this dynamic artist.
HMWL: It’s great to have you with us. Let’s start with your new EP, “Wickerman.” What was the inspiration behind this project?
The Oddness: I can’t honestly say there was an inspiration really, Sometimes tracks just come together. I was playing around layering all this quirky percussion and then hit on that groove for Wickerman, The rest came together pretty quickly after that. Discooasis has been the intro for my band sets for a year or so now.
HMWL: You’ve collaborated with Stefan Obermaier for a remix on this EP. What was it like working with him, and how did this collaboration come about?
The Oddness: Im a massive fan of Stefan’s music and he’s remixed one of my tracks in the past, which I really loved, so it was a pretty easy choice for me. Stefan is really professional as well, he has great communication, which to me is really important when i’m handing over my music to someone.
HMWL: Your sound is known for blending downtempo, dub, world music, and deep house. How did these influences come together in the creation of “Wickerman”?
The Oddness: Both tracks on the EP are more just straight up funky percussive house, and are both a fair bit higher tempo than my usual stuff, its kind of been a bit of a turning point in my sound evolution.
HMWL: Speaking of live sets, you’re known for your improvisational approach. How does that spontaneity influence your studio work?
The Oddness: They’re both very different situations for me. My studio work is quite structured, I have a process that i’m comfortable with. The live sets I feel like I have to mix it up or else I’ll get bored, there’s a certain level of structure to them but lots of stuff that’s made up on the spot, which can work.. But also fail now and then.
HMWL: In addition to the “Wickerman” EP, you’ve got a lot on your plate—new projects with Cosmovision Records, working on live sets, and even launching an animation studio. How do you balance all these creative endeavors?
The Oddness: I try to make as much of my time during winter here in Australia, jump into new things, learn stuff and prepare myself musically for the summer season here. IM looking forward to the upcoming release on Cosmovision, four original tracks and remixes from Max Tenrom and Kalu.
HMWL: With the launch of your animation studio, it sounds like you’re expanding your creative horizons even further. Can you tell us more about this new venture?
The Oddness: I worked as a motion graphics designer and animator for one of the major TV networks here for around 10 years and it just seemed like the logical next step. I’ve gone partners with my best mate and we are in the middle of converting a warehouse space into the studio, I could definitely do without the stress of starting a small business though !
HMWL: Lastly, what can fans expect from you in the coming months, especially with the Australian summer festival season approaching?
The Oddness: I’ve got a few festivals coming up including Sub Sonic Festival, Interstellar Groove and the Wild Campout which Im really looking forward to, We had a long cold winter here in Melbourne so IM looking forward to enjoying some music in the sunshine !
HMWL: We can’t wait to see what’s next for you. Thanks for chatting with us, and best of luck with the release of “Wickerman” and all your upcoming projects!
The Oddness: Thank you !
