Leicester-based brothers Sonny and Finn Murphy are the talent behind Murphy’s Law, a music duo with over five years in the industry. Their music, a blend of House and Tech House, is regularly featured on BBC Radio 1 and is supported by various artists. They have released music on renowned labels like Ministry of Sound/Sony and have been endorsed by notable artists like Jamie Jones, Joseph Capriati, and Marco Carola, among others.
The duo has graced notable stages, including Joseph Capriati’s Metamorfosi in Ibiza and various UK festivals. In addition to their performances, they have remixed Christina Aguilera’s hit song “Ain’t No Other Man”. They have an exciting lineup of releases and gigs in the next 6-12 months and an archive of over 250 unreleased tracks. Their track ‘Senorita on Speed’ has amassed over 5 million views on social media, evidencing their popularity and the anticipation of their fan base.
Ahead of their upcoming release on Ministry of Sound on 3rd November, we caught up with Murphy’s Law for an immersive chat around all things music:
Thanks for joining us, guys. Where are you joining us from, and what have you been up to over the last week?
We are joining from our studio in Leicester, in the UK, where we are based. Over the past week, in which we had our first weekend off gigging in months, we chose to spend it partying with our friends, playing a surprise b2b with Max Dean in London at his event NEXUP, and now we both have the flu, hahaha!! Definitely self-inflicted.
Tell us about your background and what inspired you to get into music.
We’re a pair of brothers hailing from Leicester who’ve collaborated on music for as long as we can remember. With our Dad being a musician for four decades, our upbringing was steeped in rich musical influences and interactions with talented musicians. We initiated the Murphy’s Law project in 2019 and have been crafting music in the studio almost daily ever since. Our creative process isn’t confined to particular genres or current trends; we prioritize experimentation and capturing our emotions in the moment.
Which of your releases means the most to you and why?
That’s a tough one. We care so much about every release we have ever put out. ‘Ain’t No Other Man’ has a special place in our hearts as it really has changed the landscape for us, and it got us our first ever overall number 1 single on Beatport, but there are also other tracks like ‘Good Gracious’ on Libero Records that we are still super proud of and play a lot in our sets.
Tell us about your Full House events.
We haven’t actually done a full house event in quite a long time, as we have been super busy playing for other people’s brands. However, Full House parties are always very special. We throw them in our hometown, Leicester, and they’re intimate parties where lots of our friends always attend and show support. The vibe is always amazing, and we feel like we can play anything we want at a full house party as the crowd is always so open. This, as a DJ, is a dream, and we have had DJs such as ROSSKO and Archie Hamilton (whom we have both booked several times) complement the party for this reason. Hopefully, we will be able to throw another one soon if we can find the time.
What is your favourite gig ever, and why?
Hmmmmm, that’s a tough one. We have had a lot of great shows recently, but three shows that stand out for different reasons from this summer were Wyld in Birmingham, Digital in Newcastle and Metamorfosi at Amnesia in Ibiza.
What has been the biggest key to your success so far?
I would say the main things behind our success have been:
1 – hard work. We literally have grafted consistently for the past four years on this project, five days a week in the studio.
2 – Not being scared of being different, we put out a real range of music and don’t worry about what other people are putting out in the market.
3 – The final thing has been not being afraid to show our true personalities online; we are happily putting out funny content because we enjoy being idiots in our spare time anyway. We believe people warm to personality as much as they do music.
What would you change about the industry if you could change anything?
That’s a tough question. There’s so much we love about this industry, but to be fair, there’s also a lot we would change. Probably the main thing we would like to see changing is originality being rewarded more. It seems like the quickest way to succeed is to try and sound like anyone else who’s hot right now, which stops people from taking risks and putting out slightly more unique stuff.
If you could offer aspiring DJs/Producers one piece of advice, what would it be?
One piece of advice for people starting out would be to play and make what you like. People overthink ‘their sound’ so much that they end up losing their creativity and don’t enjoy the making process. If you make whatever you enjoy, you will naturally discover and develop your sound over time. Also, stick at it and enjoy the journey. People think this thing happens overnight, and that is very rarely the case.
What’s next for the Murphy’s Law boys?
So, gig-wise, we’ve got some mad things on the horizon. So buzzing for Rise Festival in the French Alps. Think about it: skiing all day, then partying at a music festival at night with a killer lineup. What’s not to love? Music-wise, look out for our next track, ‘Need to Know’, dropping on Ministry of Sound. It’s got a fresh, catchy vocal, and it’s slightly more of a crossover single, which is scary but also exciting. Then we are taking it straight back underground with a single on DFTD and an EP on Edible Records. We’ve been wanting to work with that label since day one, so it felt great to tick that one off!
