Exclusive Interview: MAZ’N about music production, his new single and upcoming projects

MAZ’N has always been into music. In 2020, the EP “rising” was released and with the second album “renewal” in 2021, things started to go uphill. Live gigs and more than 20,000 monthly listeners on Spotify followed. In the meantime, MAZ’N stands for perfect festival atmosphere with its driving beats and makes people dance and dream. 2022 saw the release of the EP “on my mind”, in which MAZ’N released melodic house sounds as well as the first song with clarinet in downtempo style.
As a live act, MAZ’N works with controllers, plays synths and sings. Depending on the type of performance, the clarinet is sometimes unpacked and mixed with electronic music. His latest single runaway is out now.

Please tell us about your background and how you got into producing electronic music.

I learned different instruments and played for a lot of different artists. With my friends, who are musicians too, I talked every time we had a beer, that we have to make our own project but nothing happened. Everytime someone was busy or didn’t like the idea of the music we planed. But I didn’t want to become an old men at the bar whose saying „If only we had do something“ or „ I am sure, it would have been great“…

So I made the decision to step into electronical music, cause I am playing the piano, I can sing and play the drums, thats all I need to make my own songs. Of course I learned a lot about DAW software, different plugins and synths. That makes me feel sometime I am an IT guy, but I need that tools and spent now more time in the studio than in bars.

Your new release “runaway” has just seen the light of day. What can you tell us about the single?

I tried to create a song, which is very relaxed but dancable at the same time. For me it’s a perfect Festival song and I am really looking forward to play the song live.

Can you walk us through your creative process when producing the track “runaway“?
This was a very long way this time. First I had the chords as most of the time. After that I add a simple beat and sing to it. The first idea is often the best, so I record everything. When the chords and the hook is finished, the work begins.

It was a long way to the full arrangement. I put a lot of elements in it, more than in every other song. Also there are a lot of changes in the sounds. But there are also fun facts. The beginning of the song is a mixture from the sound of water, a crowd of people and a syntheziser.

What is your favourite equipment or software for music production, and why?
Beside some important plugins it’s Ableton. For me it’s the best combination between collecting ideas, playing Loops and a DAW. I can create a full song with it and use it for playing live.

What has been the most significant moment in your music career so far?
I think there are 2 moments. One was a really huge concert for a german act I sang Background for. That was magical to play for so much people.

The other moment was the first time I played my own songs live. When people are happy to hear your own written songs, it’s a privilege.

How do you stay current with new technology and production techniques in the constantly evolving world of electronic music?

To be honest, I am a bit afraid of AI. It’s already able to make very good songs. I read an interview with someone who spokes about AI in art. He revealed that he is not afraid, as people want to see a painting and think about the process and how the artist made it for 100 years.

I hope he is right and that people still want artists, who write their own songs. On the other hand its already common sense that artists buy songs or have ghost writers. In the end I think people notice which artist is authentic and suppose to make his own music.

Can you give us a sneak peek into any upcoming projects or collaborations you have in the works?
I will play live in the summer on festivals and in the end of summer I will release another single on 3000 Grad.
