Anthony Henderson or Tony H is a Panama born DJ, now based in Seattle WA. In 2015 he founded his own label, Late Night Munchies, then in 2019 started up Munchies After Dark, a sub-label primarily focusing in melodic house and techno.
Tony’s energetic attitude and live performance skills have always been a powerhouse in the scene as they are shining and breaking through to the forefront today. Kevin Knapp is on record saying Tony was an “artist to watch” in 2021 and that is holding true into 2022 as he was just put on “10 Rising Black Artists You Should Know” in Gray Area Magazine. Aside from founding his own labels, Tony has releases on; Desert Hearts, Dirtybird, Space Yacht, Wyldcard Records, Flashmob Records and so many more. If you’re not acquainted with Tony, Late Night Munchies, or any of his projects, we suggest this is your time to go down the rabbithole.
Hey Tony! Thanks for talking to us… where in the world do we find you today?
Currently I am based out of Seattle, WA. But my friends would say that I basically live at the airport lol.
When did you first fall in love with house music?
My love for House Music started back in 2007 when a friend of mine in high school told me to check out Fedde Le Grand and I was instantly hooked. After that I started digging for music on my own and found artist like Felix Da Housecat, Carl Cox, Hector Couto, Sean Miller, DJ T., Lauren Lane and many others.
What have been some of the proudest moments of your career to date?
Wow, honestly there have been so many from my first release back in 2013 to some of my first out of state gigs. This year in particular has been another big year for me from releasing a few records on Space Yacht, my solo EP on Desert Hearts and getting to be apart of the first Day Trip Festival that came to Seattle recently. Definitely one of the coolest moments I had was going back home to Panama earlier this year after 10+ years of being gone and my parents getting to come to my gig and see me play. I definitely cried (happy tears) after that set haha.
As someone who runs a couple of labels, what is the most challenging thing about that aspect of your career?
I think the most challenging thing is time management. Making sure I make the time to properly A&R and respond to everyone, as well as give myself time to build the graphics and do any mastering to tracks that may need it. At this point I handle all parts of the label.
And the most rewarding?
The most rewarding aspect to me is when the tracks chart in the stores or they get major plays from a radio show or dj. Even more so though, Is the fact that people trust my brand and I to release their music, so I definitely don’t take it for granted when they do and give it the same love and care I would give to any of my own releases.
You’re known for your energetic performances, is that something that’s all “part of the show”, or do you just need to move when you’re playing?
Nope, that is simply just me haha. But I mean how could you not be dancing to the music that you’re playing, assuming that you love it (which I do).
Tell us about your track for the RVDIOVCTIVE compilation, what’s the genesis of this one?
For my track “Call of the Wild” I really wanted to tap into my latin roots for this one. I really was aiming for some techy groovy vibes.
With self-releasing easier than ever for artists, what in your opinion does a good label do to get the most out of a release?
I think just continuously promoting the track goes a long way. Getting those promos out early and reaching out to different blogs in attempts at getting premieres for the track also helps. The artists also needs to remember that just because the track is out does not mean the work is over. Keep pushing your music even a month later, 6 months later, even a year later. We, as artist/producers/creators, work so hard on our craft, so we should put in that same amount of work and effort, once it is out.
What else should we be looking out from you this year?
This year I’ll be launching my 3rd label, not me being chaotic, which will be focused more on my solo productions. Initially Late Night Munchies was going to partially be for that but I get so many demos for the label that I’d rather schedule other artists than myself haha and I am not mad about that at all. Keep those demos comin! On top of the new label I have some releases coming out on Material and Gettoblaster’s label Aliens on Mushrooms. You can find me playing at different shows in Seattle and I also have an upcoming gig in LA for Day Trip’s closing party and I’ll be opening the Space Yacht stage on day 2 of the Fresh Start Block Party for New Years Eve. Instagram is the best place to find out on all of my upcoming adventures in the beep boop world and just general random memes and things.
Finally – what, for you, is the best house record ever made?
There is definitely WAY to many records to pick one as the best but a few of my favorite records would be Dennis Ferrer – Hey Hey, M.A.N.D.Y. – Body Language and Anja Schnieder – Stay Quiet which are definitely 3 records that stand out to me.
