Exclusive interview with Dubai-based producer ADHM – “If my music style was food, it would be tacos for sure!”

Listening to ADHM is like letting yourself fall into a warm and fuzzy cradle swaying gently on the ocean. The Toronto-Dubai-based producer has created mystical musical journeys for audiences around the world, charming us with deep vocals, dreamy atmospheres, and flowy rhythms.

His debut, Original (Stay With Me) released on [Souksonic], made its mark on the Beatport Top 100 list in the organic / downtempo genre in 2020. This was quickly followed by another hugely successful release, Kessa EP, a number 3 on the Beatport organic genre releases. Now that’s how you define “up and coming”.

Naturally, our team at HMWL is excited to bring you ADHM’s latest creation, Walking Moments EP. Plus, he has recently moved from Toronto to the sunny city of Dubai. We spoke to him to find out more.

Walking Moments EP

Congratulations on your new release of Walking Moments EP. We absolutely love the way it flows and the spaciousness of the soundscape! Tell us a little more about the name of this track and what it means to you.

First of all, thank you for your kind words and recognition.

Walking moments” was inspired by a turning point in my life. After a long and stable pharmaceutical path, I rerouted my journey following the stressful Covid times. This led me to leaving Canada altogether and empowered me to explore new parts of the globe that are closer to my roots, yet paired with a foreign flare, which then landed me in Dubai.

Do the lyrics “Before I get my time I’ll let you make it up a lot,” come from a personal experience? Is there a juicy story behind it?

Ha ha ha I knew you would ask. Unfortunately there are no secrets to spill. Truth to be told, the vocals were part of a sample pack that I had a while ago. I tested them and they fitted the flow and emotions of the track, but now I will try to come up with a cool story 😉

If your music style was a food, what would it be? And why?

Well! That’s a good one. I’d say tacos for sure! My music is always inspired by a main idea like making the initial groove, which is represented by the taco shell. The fillings/spices like bass, percussions and the synth is what makes it different & yummy 🙂

We all have our idols. Who are some artists that you admire and would love to work with?

That’s a tough question as I do have a few. I think Behrouz is such a well established artist and we can fairly say he’s done it all from headlining major events to creating DO NOT SIT ON THE FURNITURE. In my opinion, it is one of the most successful labels now. Big ups!!

You certainly impressed the electronic music world with your releases of Original (Stay with me) and Kessa EP. Do rankings mean much to you? What are your dreams for your music and career?

I believe that every artist releasing music dreams about charting. That feeling of satisfaction that you get when you see your music ranking is unmatchable. For me, ranking is validation, it’s a gauge to your success and how your music was perceived. When it comes to my music I’m trying to build my own style that I would be recognized by globally.

Career wise, I’m trying to diversify my passive income streams, so I can get time to focus on what I love the most, making music.

From Toronto to Dubai

Why did you decide to move to Dubai? We’ve all had an impression that this is all about glitz and glamour, and few know about the music scene here. Is there a creative atmosphere here that the world needs to hear about?

For me the good weather and sunshine were an essential part of my upbringing in Egypt. It’s what gets my creative juices flowing and that’s why moving to Dubai was a no-brainer. To answer your later question, there definitely is a creative atmosphere. One thing I noticed is that production here is more dominant between artists, which inspires me to get in the studio and create more.

Are there some Dubai-based producers that you’d like to work with? Our readers would love to hear more about them.

Glad you asked! Dubai has a lot of great music producers and I got to meet some of them.

There are two that have been on my radar and  I would like to collaborate with. The first one is Bachir Salloum is an amazing producer with an extensive skill set. The second one would be Moojo, an extremely talented music producer that will definitely push me out of my comfort zone 🙂

Tell us something about Dubai that we wouldn’t know.

Hahaha sure! Not all Rolexes you see here are real 🙂

To infinity and beyond

What can we be expecting from your next releases? Give us something to get excited about!

This year will be full of new music. I have around 12 tracks coming out. I’ve been  collaborating with a lot of amazing artists around the globe… So buckle up and stay with me 🙂

What advice would you give to new producers in the organic / downtempo scene?

Follow your heart, don’t rush just to get your music out there. It can take some time to master production, especially if you don’t have a musical background. I highly recommend not sending your tracks prematurely to labels, try to get it done-done before sending it. I’d even recommend getting it properly mixed down and mastered, if you can afford it, so you are presenting your music in the best state you can. Finally, dream and manifest that you will get there…

Thank you for this amazing interview. I had a great time answering your questions.

See you on the dancefloor….
