Tone of Arc – Retox / Detox [Touch of Class November 10th]

Tone of Arc Detox Retox

Tone of Arc is American duo of Derrick Boyd and Zoe Presnick. Together, the pair has churned out plenty of alluring, and frankly odd, tech and house cuts on a range of labels, ranging from Art Deparment’s No.19 to Touch of Class, which they again crop up on for their latest outing. With 3 brand new cuts and remixes by Signal Flow and Pattern Drama, this is an EP that fans of the more musical and harmonious side of the dance music spectrum will miss at their peril.

It’s hard to pick a favorite track here because all of them are great, and all of them do strange things with strange sound sources and get strange but stunning results. Opener ‘Retox’ is a ghoulish number with deeply filtered vox and lots of sombre synth lines. The remix is a little more melancholy and groove driven, with stabs of bass and rolling drums that keep dance floors vibing. Untouched then gets a little more loose, with elastic lines, xylophone sounds and more vocal mutterings all making for an occult atmosphere that makes you feel as well as dance. Last but not least is ‘Run Rabbit Run’, a highly romantic and late night house cut with odd synths, breathy human intonations and space like sound effects that all make for enthralling listening. If you’re looking for an EP that’ll make you dance, weep, laugh and cry in one sitting, then the always diverse Tone of Arc have served up a surefire winner.
