Video: Kungfused – So Kungfused [ITK Records – glitch, asian bass]

I’m a big fan of Bruce Lee. It’s really fun to hear the Chinese / American Kung-fu superstar sampled by a Barcelona based producer on a record label from Berlin. Global Electronica FTW. 🙂

Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup; You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

Glitchy, drum’n’bass and disco inspired electropop  (?) might be the most close definition of  Kungfused – a talented young woman producing fantastic tracks from within the heart of Barcelona. A closer investigation of her music journey reveals a long DJ career as one of the core members of Spanish Drum’n’Bass movement – Dj Magma.   It warms my heart to see more and more female DJs and producers stepping into the techno, house, bass and DnB sceenes.

On this four track EP Kungfused dives more into the global bass directions, combining crunked out Asian beats with glitches, samples, beatmaking and a raw metal jungle energy. What she already presented in her DJ and Akai APC live-sets at parties in Berlin, London, Malaga and MoutainBass Festival Spain, got now incorporated into her production work. Jumping from glitch hop, bass and global influences back to her drum and bass and jungle roots, she wittily combines an Eastern philosophy with Kung-Fu sounds, self-produced drum and melody samples and stepping glitch sounds with a slight metal touch, reminding of Bracelona´s breakcore and hardtek underground.

Rollerdisco, Don’t want to be like you and a bit more chilled and jazzy Kitchen On Fire all sound like top quality pieces that could be taken straight out of a live set by legendary AraabMuzik. Great AKAI fingerwork here indeed, with clever break build-ups, tolling bells and carefully picked classic instrument samples.

IF THE KIDS RECORDS is a label based in Berlin, focusing on electronic sounds from around the globe. They state their releases being HeartCore, but it might as well be Salsa or Techno. The So Kungfused EP is available on Bandcamp for €4 for the whole shebang.
